Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage was published in 1895 and quickly became the benchmark for modern anti-war literature. Although the exact battle is never identified, Crane based this story of a soldier’s experiences during the American Civil War on the 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville. Many veterans, both Union and Confederate, praised the book’s accurate representation of war, and critics consider its stylistic strength the mark of a literary classic.

When Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life among the Lowly was first published in 1852, no one—least of all its author, Harriet Beecher Stowe—expected the book to become a bestseller, but this antislavery novel was to become the second best-selling book in the world during the nineteenth century, second only to the Bible, and it touched off a flurry of criticism and praise. Stowe had written the novel as an angry response to the 1850 passage of the Fugitive Slave Law, which punished those who aided runaway slaves and diminished the rights of fugitive as well as freed slaves. Hoping to move her fellow Americans to protest this law and slavery in general, Stowe attempted to portray "the institution of slavery just as it was. Uncle Tom's Cabin was unique at the time in its presentation of the slaves' point of view.
Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen's most popular novel. One of the most popular novels of all time-- Renowned literary critic and historian George Saintsbury in 1894 declared it the "most perfect, the most characteristic, the most eminently quintessential of its author's works," and Eudora Welty in the twentieth century described it as "irresistible and as nearly flawless as any fiction could be."
Kate Chopin, (1850 to 1904) was a woman ahead of her time in writing The Awakening. Immediately after its publication, reviewers frequently denounced the "unwholesome" content of this book, while simultaneously acknowledging that the writing style was outstanding. It was also condemned due to its sexual openness. The harsh reaction to the book probably was the determining factor in the publisher's decision to stop publication after only a single printing. It has since sold more than a million copies.
